*69 Poker League

The *69 Poker League is an Austin, TX area poker league in its *EIGHTH* season. It's kinda like a bowling league... only a lot less shitty... and with cheaper beer.

Some thoughts about the BBJ and New $2 Contribution

The extra .25 cents on a pot the size of the last one (Season 4 had $314) would amount to a 25% increase in the season pot ($392.50). This allows me to up the prize for the Player of the Season from $70 to $90 and give out $40 to 2nd place in points which has never been done before... AND still up the prize pool for the CIT #5.

$314 + 25% increase ($1.25 insteadof $1.00 per person) = $392.50
$392.50 - $90 (1st place in points) - $40 (2nd place in points) = $262.50 left for CIT #4

$262.50 * 45% = $118.13 = $120 for 1st in CIT #5
$262.50 * 25% = $65.63 = $67.50 for 2nd in CIT #5
$262.50 * 20% = $52.50 = $50 for 3rd in CIT #5
$262.50 * 10% = $26.20 = $25 for 4th in CIT #5

All those are higher payouts for every place than for CIT #4. Just for 25 cents more. AND you reward the players that show consistency throughout the season more.

I would hate to put more emphasis on the CIT payout, because as we all saw this past Saturday... ANYTHING can happen... this is poker after all. To put so much at stake on a single game isn't a good way to reward good players. If anything, we should give the $25 for CIT 4th place instead to 3rd in points standings and only pay out the top 3 at CIT #5.

The 75 cents for the BBJ is just for fun. It's exciting and totally random. Every single casino and many underground poker clubs all run a BBJ. If you guys aren't totally into it, I can move over more of the $2 to the Season Pot... i.e $1.50 for the Season Pot and 50 cents for the BBJ.

Any thoughts?

as someone who doesn't participate and whose opinion shouldn't matter, I think you should keep the money in the pot for the tourney only. If this was a points-only league, it would be one thing. But this is a series of cash games. The points leaders have already been "rewarded" for their quality play through their cash game winnings. The tourney should be about bragging rights and fun.

As for badbeat, I'm for anything that makes the game more fun for the majority of the players. I don't care for badbeat jackpots personally but I know that a lot of people like them. If you want to go through the trouble of administering one, I think most people would like it. Just don't make the qualifier too high (I think Aces full of Kings should be sufficient).

I support the changes that Rob is proposing. Here are my thoughts:

I think having a BBJ is a fun idea. I've heard many people (other than the people who play at Rob's) complain about getting bad beats and not wanting to play poker anymore, and that's just sad. There should be a reward for really good hands, especially if they get beat by even better hands. I would also support a side pot for AA getting cracked.

Adding a prize for 2nd place and possibly 3rd place "Player of the Season" is also a good idea. Being invited to the tournament doesn't mean you will win any money, and I agree that the top 3 people have earned their place and should be rewarded regardless of the results of one game.

I would support reducing the number of payouts at the CIT. Before playing at Rob's, I only played tournaments. Online, tournaments payout anywhere from 10-33%. A tournament of 10 people pays out 3 places; one with 6 players, only 2 places pay out. Large tournaments with hundreds of players only pay the top 10%. The CIT has 8 players, and is currently paying 50%, so reducing the payout to 3 places (38%) seems reasonable to me. Additionally, the "live" freerolls that I've played in rewarded even less, 1, maybe 2 places with 20-60 players, and since the CIT is technically a freeroll since you don't pay to play it (unless you want to count your investment in the season pot), that's even more of a reason to reduce the number of places paid. 38% percent is still a really high payout.

As far as the question of splitting the $2 out to $1.50 vs $1.25 for season pot and $0.50 vs $0.75 for BBJ, it doesn't make a difference to me as of right now. If there isn't a payout for a long time, and the bad beatee gets $100 or more, maybe I'll have more of an opinion, but for now, either split is acceptable.

Rob runs a good poker game, with reasonable rules, a friendly environment, and has some good ideas for rewarding good players. I choose to play at Rob's rather than playing freerolls at a bar, where I would usually spend $3 for one beer, leave the game reeking of smoke and usually with less money than I went with since the chances of winning a payout are very low. A $2 contribution to reward good players and bad beats is a small price to play.
